Four Letterkenny Schools Advanced In School Building Programme

Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD Niall Blaney has welcomed the confirmation from the Department of Education and Science today that four Letterkenny schools are to advance in the School Building Programme 2010.   16/02/10

Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Gaelscoil Adhamhnain, and St Patrick’s School, Lurgybrack have been authorised to prepare tender documents for its extension. Scoil Colmcille, Convent Road has been approved to appoint a design team in the second quarter of this year for its extension.

Deputy Blaney has been vocal about the need for urgent action on Letterkenny schools and he has been working hard to help secure investment for a number of local schools in this year’s School Building Programme.

He has welcomed the commitment given to extensions at the four Letterkenny schools and stressed that he will continue to work on behalf of the other local schools that require investment.

“I am delighted that Scoil Mhuire gan Smal, Gaelscoil Adhamhnain, St Patrick’s School, and Scoil Colmcille have been successful in securing investment under the School Building Programme 2010.”

“I have been forthcoming in my disappointment about progress in Letterkenny schools for some time now. A number of schools in the town were in need of significant investment and I have been working hard to see that they received the priority that they deserve in the Government’s School Building programme.”

“Officials from the Department of Education and Science will be in contact with the schools shortly to advise them on the next steps they need to take.”

“I disappointed that certain schools did not progress at this time, such as St Eunan’s College, Glenswilly National School, the Educate Together in Ballyraine, and Scoil an Tsratha Mhóir in Glendowan, but I will continue to work on behalf of these schools to see that they receive investment as soon as possible.”

“The Government is investing €579 million in the School Building Programme this year. The programme will have the dual effect of modernising our local schools and providing extra capacity in growing towns like Letterkenny, and also creating local construction jobs. More than 5,300 constructions jobs will be created nationally by the programme,” concluded Niall Blaney TD.
