Local schools to benefit from works under Summer Works Scheme

The Department of Education and Science’s Summer Works Scheme will see some 59 Donegal schools benefit from minor repair works during the summer break, according to local Fianna Fáil TD Niall Blaney.    21/04/10

The annual scheme involved a variety of works, including repairs and refurbishment of roofs and toilets, electrical and mechanical work and improvements to the external environment of the school.

Welcoming the announcement by his colleague, the Tánaiste and Minister for Education and Skills Mary Coughlan TD, Deputy Blaney said that it is important that the Government continues to prioritise investment in schools and education.

“It is vital, despite the constraints on the public finances that we continue to invest in schools.”

“Creating a positive physical environment for pupils helps to enhance their learning and it is important that we continue to invest in schools.”

“Education is a priority for the Government and this record level of investment in improving our schools’ infrastructure and will not only improve the learning environment for thousands of students, but it will also stimulate economic activity by generating work for trades people across the country”.

“In total this year almost €579 million will be invested in school building infrastructure under the school building and modernisation programme.”

“The Summer Works Scheme involves a range of minor works including repairs to windows, roofs and toilets, electrical and mechanical works, and improvements to the external environment of schools.”

“Students and teachers can look forward to returning to these schools in September with the works completed.”

“Local schools that are benefiting from the work will be contacted by the Department shortly for details on how to proceed,” concluded Niall Blaney TD.
