Government commits €25.87 million funding for Letterkenny Sewerage Scheme
Local Fianna Fáil TD Niall Blaney has welcomed the confirmation that the Government approved €25.87 million in funding to allow Donegal County Council to award a contract to Response/Severn Treat Consortium for the Letterkenny Sewerage Scheme Wastewater Treatment Plant. 27/04/2010The contract will be funded under the Department of the Environment’s Water Service Investment Programme 2010 – 2012 and includes a Wastewater Treatment Plant, Sludge Treatment Plant, Pumping stations, new stormwater treatment, some trunk mains and a new outfall.
Welcoming the confirmation, Deputy Blaney said: “I am delighted that this significant funding has been amade available for a sewerage scheme in Letterkenny. This is something that I have been working on since I was first elected in 2002. The town badly needs this investment in its sewerage system and I am happy that it has now been possible.”
“This will allow for a modern wastewater treatment infrastructure to meet the domestic and commercial needs in Letterkenny for the foreseeable future. It is also important in the context of Lough Swilly as water quality will be improved by eliminating the discharge of poorly treated effluent into the Lough*.
“Donegal County Council can move towards awarding the contract for the work to be done. I hope that the work commence as soon as possible,” concluded Niall Blaney TD.
