€20million Government Labour Activation Fund results in almost 6,600 training places

Some 6,589 training places have been created around the country under the Government‘s Labour Activation Fund, according to local Fianna Fáil TD Niall Blaney.    02/06/2010

This brings the number of places being provided by the Government this year to train and provide work experience for unemployed people to more than 160,000, he said.

“The Government’s Labour Activation Fund is particularly targeted at the under 35 age group, those who became unemployed because of a rapid downturn in their industry of expertise, and the long-term unemployed.”

“Twenty million euro has been dedicated to the Fund and this has resulted in the creation of 6,589 training places around the country.”

“This was the first time that the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation went to the private sector looking for tenders and submissions for suitable areas for training and the result has been very successful. The interest from companies exceeded our expectation and the proposals for training programmes covered a very wide spectrum of industries.”

“Three quarters of the available places will be aimed at those with qualifications at or below Leaving Certificate Level. For those with higher-level qualifications wanting to re-skill, there is a great range of courses on offer in areas that have great potential for growth.”

“The training ranges in issues such as ecotourism, E business, career guidance, biomass and wood energy, and E-business training,”

“Courses that will be provided in Donegal include computing courses which will be offered by LYIT and career guidance courses which will be offered by Career Decisions Ireland.”

“Full details of the courses being run by organisations around the country are available from the Department of Enterprise, Trade and Innovation and advertisements for courses will be advertised in local press.”

“I would encourage people who are out of work to investigate the opportunities provided by the different courses on offer,” he said.
