Blaney welcomes the publication of the Saville Report

Donegal North East Fianna Fáil TD and Chair of the British Irish Interparliamentary Assembly Niall Blaney has welcomed the publication of Lord Saville’s Report on the events of Bloody Sunday today.    15/06/10

The apology from British Prime Minister David Cameron in the House of Commons today is particularly welcome, he said.

“I know that the apology from Prime Minister Cameron in the House of Commons today will resonate particularly strongly with the families of those killed in Bloody Sunday.”

“The publication of this Report from Lord Saville some 12 years after the enquiry was set up by Tony Blair is a landmark in Anglo Irish history and I hope that it helps the people of Derry move on from the horrific events of that day.”

“The verification that those killed on the day were entirely innocent, that they did nothing to justify their shooting and that members of the British Army acted wrongly, will no doubt be of great solace to the families of those killed.”

“There is no doubt that this day was central in the entire history of the Troubles on this island and this apology from Prime Minister Cameron is very significant and welcome today.”

“The Irish Government has continuously expressed its solidarity with the families affected. I want to personally reiterate my solidarity with them today and express my hope that the Report will help as they remember their loved ones today,” concluded Niall Blaney TD.
